The room
A nail salon is a room where somebody holds your hand for forty minutes. That is the whole product. Everything else is arrangement.
So the parts worth judging are small and physical. Whether the file coming out is fresh. Whether the tools are cleaned in front of you or somewhere you cannot see. Whether the person at the table asks what shape you want before they start filing, and whether they stop when you say that is short enough.
Ask about any of it while you are sitting down. It is a fair question in any salon and it should get a straight answer.

Square, squoval, round, almond, coffin or stiletto. Point at a hand if it is easier than naming it.

Say it in terms of what you have to do. Typing, a keyboard, a baby, guitar strings.

Say up front if there is an old set coming off. It changes how long the chair is booked for.

How long each one actually lasts
The honest ranges, not the best case. Which one is right for you depends far more on your week than on your taste.

Ranges assume the set is removed properly rather than picked off. Picking gel or dip takes a layer of your own nail with it, and that is what people are describing when they say a service ruined their nails.

Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk ins are taken as chairs come free. Calling first is how you find out whether that means now or in forty minutes.
Can you fix a set from another salon?
Usually. Bring it in and we will tell you honestly whether it is a repair, a fill, or a soak off and a fresh start.
How short is too short?
Whatever you say it is. Shape and length are agreed before anything is filed, and you can stop us halfway through and change your mind.
Can you copy a photo?
Bring it. Freehand, chrome, french and ombre are all done here. If a design will not sit properly at your nail length we will say so before we start, not after.
Can I bring my own polish?
Yes. Bring the bottle and we will use it. Worth knowing that a color you loved in the bottle can read completely differently across five nails.
Is there a quiet time to come?
Early afternoon on a weekday is usually the calmest stretch. Saturday afternoon is the opposite of that.
